Tigers Lose Lead Late to SFA

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team surrendered a big lead versus Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday evening, falling 14-11 at R.W.E. Jones Park at Wilbert Ellis Field in a non-conference game.

GSU led 10-3 after five innings, but a furious comeback by SFA, dissipated the Tigers' advantage, thanks to a shaky performance from the GSU bullpen. Grambling State was outscored 11-1 over the final four innings of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Grambling State began the game on fire, building a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Trevor Hatton provided the big spark for the Tigers, belting a three-run homer to left field.
  • Stephen F. Austin cut GSU's lead in half with a three-run home run of its own in the top of third inning.
  • In the bottom of the inning, David Valoy Jr. hit an RBI single to centerfield, stretching GSU's lead to 7-3.
  • It seemed as if the Tigers had put the game away in the fifth inning, building a 10-3 advantage, Aries Gardner lace an RBI single to right field, putting Grambling State on top 8-3. Valoy Jr. stroked an RBI triple just past the Lumberjacks left fielder, scoring Gardener from first base. Trey Burrell drove in another run for the Tigers, with a single back to the pitcher, giving GSU the 10-3 cushion.
  • However, momentum began to shift the Lumberjack's way the sixth inning with another three-run jack to pull within 10-6. 
  • Grambling State plated its final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth, when a wild pitch on a walk, scored Cameron Bufford from third.
  • SFA grabbed it s first lead of the contest, 13-11, in the top of the eighth inning on two-RBI double by Garrett Goetz. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Grambling State plated 11 runs on 12 hits. The Tigers left seven runners on base
  • Stephen F. Austin finished with 14 runs on 11 hits, leaving seven runners stranded 
  • David Valoy Jr. went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a triple
  • Trevor Hatton went 1-for-5 with the 3-run homer
  • Terry Burrell III and Nasir Frederick both drove in two runs each
  • Santiago Hungria, III (1-1) was charged with the loss, surrendering four runs on two hits. Hungria issued three walks with two strikeouts
  • Malik Abdul got the start for GSU, working 3.0 innings, allowing three unearned runs on four hits, with one strikeout.
  • Emir Garrett, Heath Backhus, Jacorey Boudreaux and Brett Washington made relief appearances for the Tigers. The GSU bullpen issued nine walks and hit three batters.
  • Colton Castilaw (1-0) noticed the win in relief for the Lumberjacks, allowing one run on two hits, to go along with two strikeouts and one walk

Grambling State returns to action on Friday evening to kickoff senior weekend versus Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC West Division foe, Texas Southern. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at  R.W.E Jones Park at Wilbert Ellis Field.
