GSU Falls Short to BCU in SWAC Tournament Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | A late rally by the Grambling State University baseball team came up just short, as the Tigers dropped the opening game of the 2022 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament, 4-3, to Bethune-Cookman at Regions Field, on Wednesday evening.

The Tigers nearly erased a 4-1 deficit, steadily whittling away at the Wildcats lead, pulling within one run in the bottom of the eighth. GSU, put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't cash in, falling into the elimination game.l

GSU starting pitcher Shemar Page, worked all nine innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He also added to his strikeout tally, fanning seven batters, Page's only true blemish, was a three-run home run in the top of the fourth. 

Grambling State registered six hits and were paced at the plate by Terry Burrell III and John Garcia, who both picked up two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Bethune-Cookman cracked the scoring column first, plating a run in the top the first inning.
  • Terry Burrell III led the bottom of the first off with a single to centerfield. Jarficur Parker moved Burrell over the second base with a sacrifice bunt. After Burrell advanced to third, a passed ball allowed him to score, tying the game 1-1.
  • BCU pushed back in front of GSU, 4-1, on a three-run home run in the top of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers cut the Wildcats' lead to 4-2 on a John Garcia chopper up the middle, scoring Burrell from third. 
  • John Garcia helped GSU pull within a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Tigers tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, getting runners on first and season with one out, but BCU stuck out the final two batters, sending Grambling State into Thursday's elimination game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Grambling State scored three runs on six hits, leaving seven runners on base. The Tigers committed one errors
  • Bethune-Cookman finished with four runs on six hits, leaving four runners stranded 
  • BCU made one error
  • Terry Burrell III went 2-for-5 with two runs scored
  • John Garcia went 2-for-4 with two RBI
  • Louis Lipthratt picked up the win for BCU, allowing two runs on four hits in six full innings

Grambling State awaits its opponent for Wednesday's elimination game. First pitch is set for approximately 6 p.m.
