RUSTON, La.| The Grambling State University softball team sealed game one of the long-anticipated completion of the Alcorn State series that had paused in the bottom of the third inning due to inclement weather.
The Lady Tigers were winning, 1-0 when the game was halted as Ta'Mya Johnson scored on an RBI from Antiya Randle in the bottom of the first inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Grambling State (21-21, 9-13 SWAC) hit the gas to open today's action scoring out the gate as Antiya Randle hit a two-run RBI single to left field to score Kaytlyn Moore and Ta'Mya Johnson
-GSU took a 4-1 lead as Nyah Jones came to the plate and notched a single to centerfield scoring India Wells before being doubled out by the Braves
-Alcorn State (16-31, 9-12 SWAC) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Amari Ramsey singled to centerfield and advanced to second base scoring Tyesha Cole
-The Lady Tigers scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Ta'Mya Johnson singled to centerfield to score Deija Russell making the score 5-1
-A strong defensive effort by GSU held the Braves from staging a comeback as Grambling State took game one, 5-1
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Grambling State registered seven hits, five runs and one error
- Alcorn State finished with five hits, one run and four errors
-Payton Shells secured the victory for GSU pitching all seven innings and only allowing one run and one error
-Lexi Veamoi pitched six innings for Alcorn State allowing five runs, five errors and walking two batters
UP NEXT
The Lady Tigers return to the GSU Softball Complex to close out the regular season by facing Alcorn State in a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon with the second game to follow.
