CLINTON, Miss. | The Grambling State University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2022 season on Friday night as the Lady Tigers finished fourth, while the men claimed ninth at the Choctaw Trails during The Opener, hosted by Mississippi College.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
- Grambling State finished with 133 points to take fourth
- Mississippi College won the meet with 20 points
- William Carey (51) and Louisiana-Monroe (78) placed second and third, respectively
- Blue Mountain (135), Millsaps (159), Delta State (174), Mobile (174) and Mississippi University for Women (245) rounded out the nine-team field
HOW THEY FARED – WOMEN
- Mercy Kwambai led the way for the Lady Tigers, finishing ninth, in 19 minutes and 51 seconds
- Ruth Kibet placed 13th, with a time of 20.13.60
- Sharon Laibich crossed the line in 22:26.40 to finish 43rd
- Lillian Thuo finished in 25:23.40 and Deborah Kiplagat in 28:46.10
MEN'S RESULTS
- Grambling State recorded 226 points to finish ninth
- Mississippi College ran away with the meet, registering 16 points to capture the victory
- William Carey (68) and Louisiana-Monroe (109) placed second and third, respectively
- Mobile (120) finished fourth, followed by Blue Mountain (125), Southern (153), Millsaps (177) and Alcorn State (210)
- Mississippi University for Women (278) and Tougaloo College (290) closed out the 11-team field

Grambling State returns to action on September 17 with a short trip to Monroe, La., to compete in the Warhawk Invite, hosted by the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
