CLINTON, Miss. | Mercy Kwambai finished 12th and Mathis Cheboi captured 15th to highlight the Grambling State University men's and women's cross country performances on Saturday morning at the Watson Cross Country Classic, hosted by Mississippi College, at the Choctaw Trails.
Kwambai led the Lady Tigers with her 12th-place finish on the women's 6K course, while Cheboi, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Runner of the Week, continued his strong season with a 15th-place finish on the 8K course.
WOMEN'S RESULTSÂ
- Alabama-Huntsville won the meet with 22 points
- Mississippi College placed second with 33 points
- Louisiana Tech took third with 97 points, followed by Spring Hill (119), Milksops (131), UA Rich Mountain (147), Ozarks (195), Jarvis Christian (228) and LeMoyne-Owen (230)
HOW THEY FARED – WOMENÂ
- Mercy Kwambai, Ruth Kibet and Sharon Laibich gave GSU three runners inside the Top 20
- Kwambai led the way with a 12th-place finish, crossing the finish line in 23:57.5
- Kibet, the SWAC Women's Runner of the Week, finished 15th in 24:29.7
- Laibich claimed the 20th spot in 24:54.1
- Lillian Thuo placed 41st, with a time of 27:12.1
MEN'S RESULTSÂ
- Grambling State finished with 277 points to claim 10th
- Alabama-Huntsville had five runners inside the Top 10 and won the meet with 25 points
- Mississippi College placed second with 33 points
- Jackson State (101) took third, followed by Ozarks (139), Spring Hill (163), Milksops (179), Meridian CC (196), UA Rich Mountain (219) and Louisiana Tech (240)
- Mississippi Valley State (291), Tougaloo (309), Jarvis Christian (357) and LeMoyne-Owen (397) wrapped up the 14-team field
HOW THEY FARED – MENÂ
- Mathias Cheboi was the first GSU runner to finish, placing inside the Top 20, with a 15th-place finish on the 8K course, with a time of 25:43.2
- Devin Malone and Miciah Myles crossed in 34:49.1
- Dante Montaque and Anthony Davis wrapped up the team in times of 35:07.8 and 35:08.0, respectively
