Grambling State Women’s Soccer Pushes Win Streak to Six Games, Beats MVSU 3-1

ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to six games with a 3-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Friday afternoon at the Mississippi Valley Soccer Complex.
 
The Tigers hopped on the Delta Devils early, scoring all three of their goal in the first half of the match. 
 
GSU improved to 8-4-3 overall and 5-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). MVSU fell to 2-8-0, 1-4-0 in conference. 
 
HOW IT HAPPPENED
  • Grambling State took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Karlyn Judge found the back of the net with a help of Beatriz Kretteis and Samantha Diaz. 
  • In the 32nd minute, Sophia Lezizidis stretched GSU's lead to 2-0 with her third goal of the year. 
  • Naya Viavla got in the scoring mood, nothing her second goal of the season, and giving the Tigers a comfortable 3-0 lead. 
  • Mississippi Valley State found the scoreboard in the 78th minute on a goal by Price Freeman. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • GSU outshot MVSU 10-9. The Tigers put five shots on goal, while the Delta Devils placed three on frame. 
  • Grambling State held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. 
  • Mississippi Valley State committed eight fouls. GSU committed six fouls.
  • Madison Covey-Taylor got the start in goal for GSU, playing 45 minutes and making one save. Aimee Benton entered at the beginning of the second half, making one save and allowing one goal.
 
UP NEXT
Grambling State looks to protect its unbeaten record in SWAC play as the Tigers travel to Lorman, Miss. to face Alcorn State on Sunday. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
