GRAMBLING, La. | Three players scored over 20 points for Grambling State and the Tigers breezed to a 113-73 victory over Champion Christian on Tuesday evening at Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Jalen Johnson scored a team-high 23 points to lead a hot shooting GSU team to the win. Jordan Smith and
Kintavious Dozier added 21 points apiece for Grambling State. Smith added 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals and block to notch a double-double.
Two more GSU players reached double-figures. Jonanthan Aku tallied 14 points while
Tra'Michael Moton tossed in 10 points.
Grambling State wasn't just solid offensively but was active on defense as well. GSU forced 23 turnovers with 17 coming by way of steals. Grambling State outrebounded CCC 47-24.
Grambling and Champion Christian battled each other neck-and-neck in the first half with a both teams shooting above 50 percent in the opening frame.
With GSU leaded 4-2 at the 17:22 mark of the first half, Champion Christian used a 3-pointer by Damian Bohlman to jump and front 5-4. CCC would trail again until the 11:18 mark when Dozier scored a fast break layup to put GSU up 21-20.
Both teams traded buckets the rest of the half with Grambling carrying a 47-44 lead into halftime.
GSU came out of the locker room on fire, opening the second half on a 10-1 run to go up 57-45 with 16:46 left in the game. Grambling State continued to build distance on the scoreboard, crafting a 21-point lead (77-56) midway through the second half.
Grambling State outscored Champion Christian 66-29 in the second half to cruise to the 113-73 triumph.
Champion Christian was led by AJ Williams, who poured in a game-high 27 points.
