Grambling Suffers 80-67 Loss at Troy

TROY, Ala | The Grambling State University men's basketball team fell 80-67 in Friday afternoons matchup versus Troy in the Trojan Classic.  
 
GSU (2-5) was led by Terrence Lewis who picked up 11 points and brought down six rebounds. Jalen Johnson added 10 points, two rebounds and a steal for the Tigers. 
 
The Tigers was strong in the early stages. GSU led by as many as eight, 20-12, with 9:47 to go in the half. 
 
However, the momentum began to shift when the Trojans went on an 8-0 run to tie the game 20-20. A pair of baskets by Zahad Munford and Johnson put the Tigers back in front 24-20 with 6:44 remaining in the half. 
 
Troy (3-3) snagged the lead following pair free throws and a 3-pointer from Eugene Christyon to make it 25-24. Christyon paced the Trojans with a game-high 23 points with four steals, three rebounds and three assists. 
 
GSU regained the lead with 1:25 left in the opening period on a steal and fast break layup by Kintavius Dozier, making it 33-31. Troy carried a 36-33 lead into half time. 
 
Jimel Cofer opened the second half knocking down a 3-pointer for Grambling State, putting GSU back in front 37-36. The Tigers, however struggled to maintain their rhythm. Troy seized pushed ahead and never looked back, outscoring GSU 44-33 in the second half to claim the 80-67 win. 
 
GSU and Troy shot identical percentages from the field, both going 25-of-55 (45.5 percent). The Tigers also shot better from behind the arc, going 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) compared to Troy's 3-of-15 (20 percent) from deep.
 
One of the biggest differences in the game came at the free throw line. The Trojans got to the line 39 times, knocking down 27 free throws. GSU went 13-of-20 from the charity stripe.

Grambling State returns to action on Dec. 2 when the Tigers travel Dayton, Ohio to take on the Dayton Flyers. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
