GOING TO THE ‘SHIP: Grambling State Beats TSU 3-0, Advances to Sunday’s SWAC Title Game

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | For the fifth time in the past six season, the Grambling State University Women's Soccer team is headed to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship Game.  

The Tigers easily disposed on Texas Southern 3-0 at the PVAMU Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon to claim their place in Sunday's title match. Kayla Reed was the offensive catalyst for GSU, registering two assists and a goal.  

For the second time in as many days, Grambling State (14-4-4) held the opposition scoreless with stifling defense.  

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Grambling State struck quickly in when Naya Vialva fired a rocket into the net off a corner kick by Kayla Reed, giving GSU a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. 
  • Freshman Sophia Lezizidis scored her third goal of the tournament in the 57th minute, stretching the Tigers' advantage to 2-0.  
  • GSU put the game out of reach in 61st minute when Karlyn Judge beat Texas Southern's keeper to make it 3-0.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • GSU outshot TSU 16-7. Grambling State put 11 shots on frame while Texas Southern put three on goal. 
  • GSU held a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. 
  • GSU committed 19 fouls. TSU was whistled for 10 fouls.  
  • Madison Covey-Taylor got the shutout for the Grambling State, playing all 90 minutes in goal and making three saves.

Grambling State awaits the winner of Friday night's semifinal match between No. 2 Jackson State and No. 3 Southern. Sunday's championship game is set for 1 p.m. at the PVAMU Soccer Complex and will be streamed on the SWAC Digital Network/YouTube.
