GRAMBLING, La. | Head coach Nakeya Hall and the Grambling State University softball team hits the road to open its 2023 season at the River City Classic in Vicksburg, Miss., hosted by Jackson State University at Sports Force Park.
GSU opens tournament play versus Southeastern Baptist at 1 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Lady Tigers take on Xavier (La.) at noon and Alabama A&M in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m. Grambling State wraps up its trip to Vicksburg versus Tennessee State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
In last year's River City Classic, GSU went 3-2 including a 17-2 victory on tournament host Jackson State.
The Lady Tigers return to the diamond after an impressive 2022 season that saw GSU eclipse the 20-win mark for the first time in over a decade. Grambling State closed the season with a 24-24 overall record, qualifying for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament with an 11-13 mark in conference play.
GSU returns All-SWAC performer India Wells, a redshirt-senior second-baseman from McRae, Ga. earned who batted a team-leading .338 with three doubles. 21 RBI and rack up 23 stolen bases in 29 attempts.
In addition to Wells, the Lady Tigers are poised for a strong season as they return a wealth of veteran leadership and talent to the diamond, including seven of their top nine hitters. GSU also brings back four pitchers from its six-person rotation from last season.

Hall enters her fourth season leading the black & gold.
