VICKSBURG, Miss. | The Grambling State University softball team opened its 2023 season with an 11-1 victory in five innings over Southeastern Baptist on day one of the River City Classic at Sports Force Park on Friday afternoon.
GSU used speed on the base paths to to keep pressure on Chargers throughout the afternoon. As a team, the Lady Tigers racked up 10 stolen bases.
Tytianna Robinson led the Lady Tigers offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Starting pitcher Lauren Ervin earned the win, working 2.0 innings, surrendering just one hit with striking out five batters. Sherrell Matthews working 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one unearned run on ho hits,
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the bottom of the first inning, India Wells reached base on a bunt single with one out. After Wells stole second and third base, Cadashia Collins put the Lady Tigers on top 1-0 on a sacrifice fly.
- GSU added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to defensive miscues by the Chargers.
- After adding another run in the third frame, Grambling State took full control of the contest in the fourth. Tytianna Robinson laced a bases loaded RBI single through the infield, scoring Dazzlyn Woodard from third. Kayliana Cash hit what looked like a routine pop fly to shortstop that was dropped, allowing two more runs to cross the plate, putting the Lady Tigers on top 8-0.
- A 3-RBI single by Asli Strozier cleared the bases, giving GSU an 11-0 advantage. Strozier was thrown out at second to end the inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State registered six hits and committed one error
- Five GSU players recorded hits
- Southeastern Baptist tallied one hit and made three errors
- The Lady Tigers registered 10 stolen bases

Grambling State returns to action in the River City Classic on Saturday with two games, The Lady Tigers open with Xavier (La.) at 12 p.m. before taking on Alabama A&M at 2 p.m.
