GSU Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Texas College

RUSTON, La. | The Grambling State University softball team swept Texas College 7-2 and 8-0 (5 innings) in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Ruston Sports Complex.

Game 1

The GSU (3-3) got a strong performance on the mound from starting pitcher Dacia Richard. Richard (1-1) racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts, surrendering just two runs on two hits through five innings of work. 

The Lady Tigers dominated at the plate, scoring seven runs on 10 hits. Kaytlyn Moore, India Wells and Jayda Williams all had multi-hit games for Grambling State, Cadashia Collins went 1-for-2 at the dish, driving in three runs. 

With two runners on base in the first inning, Collins notched her first RBI of the day when she grounded out to shortstop, scoring Moore from third base. Ta'Mya Johnson singled through in the infield bringing Wells around to to make the score 2-0. Nyah Jones gave GSU a three-run cushion with an RBI single to left field.

After Texas College cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning, Jayda Williams hit a RBI single just past shortstop to make it 5-2. In the sixth, Wells smoked an RBI triple, extending GSU's advantage to 6-2. Collins wrapped up scoring with her third RBI, scoring Wells on a single. 

Game 2

In the second game, Grambling State got off to a bit of a slow start on offense, but quickly heated up. In the bottom of the third inning, India Wells got things cooking with a single up the middle. After stealing second base and advancing to third on a fly ball, she used her speed by swiping home, giving the Lady Tigers the 1-0 advantage. 

GSU broke the game open with a six run fourth inning. Khahli Malone's pinch hit three-run home run punctuated the big inning for the Lady Tigers. 

Jordan Hodge secured the the mercy rule victory with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Erin Gibbs (1-0) earned the win on the mound for GSU, working four innings, giving up two hits and fanning three batters.

Grambling State travels to Baton Rouge, La. To compete in the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by Southern beginning on Saturday, Feb. 18.
