GSU Track & Field Wraps Up Indoor Season at SWAC Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Grambling State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams finished the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Championships with three athletes snatching individual podium spots.

Dior Nicholson earned second place in the women's shot put, Jamie Richardson landed third in the women's high jump and Dakari Betts raced to third place in the men's 60 meter hurdles. 

The men finished in ninth place in the team standings, while the women claimed 10th in the team standings. 

Day 1 - Thursday 

GSU's Anaya Jones got things started in the women's pentathlon. Her strongest finish was in the the shot put where she placed second with a throw of 10.23m. Sh wrapped up sixth in the 60m hurdles, ninth in the high jump, 10th in the 800m run and 12th in the long jump. 

Mercy Kwambai earned fifth in the 3000m run with a mark of 11:11.70, while Ruth Kibet came in eighth (11:18.67).

In the men's 3000m, Mathias Cheboi clocked in a 8:47.45, landing fifth place. 

In the men's heptathlon, Anthony Davis and Dante Montague competed for the Tigers. Davis turned in a fifth place performance in the high jump, leaping 1.83m. That was the highest placing for either athlete in the heptathlon.

The GSU women came in sixth in the distance medley, turning in a time of 13:18.31. 

Day 2 - Friday

GSU claimed racked up three podiums on the final day of the championships

Dior Nicholson highlighted the performances for GSU on Friday, taking second place in the women's shot put with a distance of 13.67m. On the men's side, Terrence Bell locked up seventh with a throw of 13.91m.

Jamie Richardson shined for the Lady Tigers in the high jump, snagging third place with leap of 1.63m.

Dakari Betts also notched a podium spot, coming in third place in the men's 60m. 

Cheboi grabbed fourth in the men's 5000m (15:25.30), while Kwambai (19:35.25) and Kibet (19:49.70) earned fifth and seventh on the women's side. 

In the women's 60m hurdles, Ivory Davis earned a top 10 spot, coming in seventh with a time of 8.87. In the 60m dash, Kyla Blockett blazed her way into sixth place, clocking in at 7.63. 

Malachi Johnson earned a top 10 for the men in the 400m, coming in 10th. 

Alabama State claimed the men's and women's conference titles.
