NATCHITOCHES, La. | The Grambling State University softball team lost a hard fought battle to Northwestern State, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Demon Diamond.
GSU outhit the Lady Demons 6-5, but struggled to convert baserunners into runs, leaving nine runners on base. India Wells led the Lady Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Grambling State (5-6) threatened to break the scoreless tie in the top of the third, loaded the bases up following a two out single by Wells. Northwestern State (7-3) got out of the jam with a high pop fly to shallow left field.
NSU picked up its first hit of the game on a single by Taylor Williams. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then to third on a wild pitch, Bailie Ragsdale brought her in to score with an RBI single to go on top 1-0. The Lady Demons scored their second run on a groundout to second base.
Northwestern State carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning,
The Lady Tigers cracked the score column in the fifth inning when Nyah Jones brought Cadashia Collins in on a groundout to shortstop.
Grambling State had another scoring opportunity in the sixth when GSU got its first two batters on base. A sac bunt by Jayda Williams advanced the runners to second and third with one out. A strikeout and pop up ended the threat for the Lady Tigers.
GSU couldn't overcome the deficit in the seventh inning.
Jordan Hodge (0-1) was efficient on the mound for the Lady Tigers, working six innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. She struck out one batter and issued no walks.
Maggie Darr earned the win in relief for northwestern State, surrendering one run on four hits with a strikeout in two innings of work.
