Grambling State Softball Sweeps Texas Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University softball team completed a sweep of Texas Southern this weekend, defeating TSU 3-2 on Friday and dominating Saturday's doubleheader cruising to a 10-2 win to start the day, then closing it with an 11-3 triumph. 

It marked the first time since 2009 that GSU has swept Texas Southern in softball.

Game 1

GSU (14-8-1 overall, 3-0 SWAC)) got on the board first with a RBI double from Cadashia Collins that allowed Kaytlynn Moore to score. Collins advanced to third and was brought home by a RBI single from Jayda Williams. GSU led 2-0 at the bottom of the first inning.

Texas Southern (2-11) couldn't seem to breakthrough until the top of the third inning, when Ja'Lynn Swiney doubled through the right side allowing Marissa Martinez to advance home.

TSU struck again in the top of the fourth as Madison Griggs scored a run off a RBI double by Marissa Martinez.

At the bottom of the sixth, Wells, who had already stolen second base was brought home by a SAC bunt by Nyah Jones. Grambling State got away with a 3-2 win over Texas Southern.

Game 2

GSU started scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Jayda Williams hit an RBI single to center field bringing Cadashia Collins home.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tamayah Johnson hit a RBI single that allowed Deija Russell to score. After advancing to second, Johnson recorded another run for GSU after an RBI double by Katelynn Walls to make it 3-0.

A groundout to third base from Anaiyah Fultz put Walls in position to advance to third and she was brought home by an RBI single from Kaytlyn Moore. Collins doubled through the left side and Moore scored after stealing second base, extending the lead to 5-0.

Grambling State continued scoring in the bottom of the fourth adding three mores stretching the advantage to 8-0

TSU (2-13, 0-3) didn't get on the board until the top of the fifth with two runs by Destinee Dixon and Haley Castro.

Grambling solidified their 10-2 win in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dazzlyn Woodard hit an RBI single bringing Johnson home and Collins recorded a RBI double allowing Woodard to score.

Game 3

Texas Southern got on the board first in the top of the second with a homer by Haley Castro.

GSU answered quickly in the bottom of the second with runs from Jones, Johnson and Fulton giving the tigers a 3-1 lead.

Daryn Haslam homered in the top of the third and brought Richardson home tying the game 3-3.

GSU recorded three runs in the bottom of the fourth expanding its lead to 6-3.

The bottom of the sixth was action filled as GSU added five runs and pulled away from TSU 11-3.

Grambling State faces Jackson State on Wednesday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at the GSU Softball Complex.
