GSU Rallies for Win to Close Doubleheader at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas | The Grambling State University softball team erased a five-run deficit to defeat Tarleton State 7-6 in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Tarleton Softball Complex.

The win avenged the Lady Tigers' 10-0 loss in the opening contest of the day. 

The victory improved GSU to 20-12-1 on the year. 

Game 1 

In the opening game, it was tight battle for the first three and a half innings. Grambling State threatened to score in the top of the second, loading the bases up with two outs. The Lady Tigers couldn't cash in, however, and found themselves trailing 2-0 at the end of the third.  

Tarleton State used a five run fourth inning to to craft a commanding 7-0 lead. A three-run homer in the sixth inning allowed the Texans to put the run rule in effect and end the game. 

Jordan Hodge (1-2) was charged with the loss, surrendering two run on one hit. She allowed four walks and struck out one. 

Game 2

The Lady Tigers bounced back in game two, earning a come from behind 7-6 triumph. 

Grambling State opened the first inning strong after Cadashia Collins drove a single straight through the middle, bringing in Kaytlyn Moore for the run giving Grambling a 1-0 lead.

Tarleton State responded with six runs in the bottom of first inning. However, Grambling State refused to bow. 

Grambling State's bats came to life in the fifth inning. The Tigers tacked on three runs on three hits and and a pair of errors. After Moore reached base on a error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, a double from Collins brought her in to score, plating GSU's second run of the day. Nyah Jones followed that up with a RBI single to make it 6-3 Texans. 

Katelynn Walls smashed an RBI double to right field, pulling the Lady Tigers within two runs, 6-4 

With GSU down to its final out, Walls came up big once again for the Lady Tigers, cranking a two-RBI triple to the right centerfield gap, tying the game 6-6. A fielding error by TSU allowed Walls to score from third and give GSU a 7-6 lead.

Walls led Grambling State at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBI.

Grambling's defense held strong in the bottom of the inning, using a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win.

Dacia Richard (6-3) earned the win in relief, surrendering no hits and striking out four batters with one walk in six innings pitched. 

Grace Garcia (10-5) who earned a win for TSU in the first game, was nabbed with the loss in the second contest. She worked 2.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits with a walk and three Ks.
