Grambling State Softball Sweeps Southern

GRAMBLING, La. |  The Grambling State University softball completed a sweep of of Southern University, winning both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Softball Complex. GSU needed 11 innings to defeat the Jaguars 7-6 in the first contest, but easily disposed of SU in the second contest, winning 11-0. 

Game 1
Grambling State got the scoring started early. Following a walk and single, Nyah Jones laced an RBI single to right field, putting GSU in front 1-0. 

Southern University responded with two runs in the top the third inning to go up 2-1. 

India Wells got the bottom of the frame started with a bang with a lead off double to center field. Wells then stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the catcher tying the game 2-2. Cadashia Collins followed with a double to left center field.

After a single shifted Collins to third, Tytianna Robinson grounded out to second plating Collins extending GSU's lead 3-2. Deija Russell sent one through the right side bringing in Ta'mya Johnson and Jayda Williams to push Grambling State over 5-2.

The Jaguars added a run in the top of the fifth when Kameryn Adkins homered in the field cutting into GSU's lead 5-3.

Southern University had a strong sixth inning adding three runs to take the lead 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson used a SAC Bunt to score Janecia King tying the game 6-6 and forcing extra innings.

The Tigers remained focused as they clawed their way to a 7-6 victory taking the win in the eleventh inning after Deija Russell who was placed on second reached on a fielders choice.

Dacia Richard (7-3) won the pitchers battle working eleven innings, fanning four Jaguars, and giving up seven hits.

Nyah Jones paced GSU (3-4) at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI single.

Game 2 
Grambling State blanked Southern University 11-0 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at the GSU Softball Complex. 

The Tigers sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs off eight hits. 

Grambling State continued to dominate adding two runs in the bottom of the third extending their lead 11-0.

The game only went to five innings and was called due to mercy.

Sherrell Matthews (2-2) won on the mound for Grambling, pitching five innings, allowing no runs and striking out

Grambling State returns to action Friday, April 7 in Lorman, Miss. to open a three-game series versus Alcorn State. First pitch is et for 4 p.m.
