GSU Track & Field Looks Strong at AT NSU Leon Johnson Invite

NACHITOCHES, La. | The Grambling State University track and field team claimed three victories on Saturday at the NSU Leon Johnson Invite, winning the long jump and women's 100m hurdles, before securing a win in the women's 5000m.

"I'm extremely please with how every event unit competed today," said GSU Head Coach LaMonte Vaughn, Jr. "We've been working really hard and it is good to see it paying off for our student athletes. We can't get comfortable. We must learn how to handle success and keep pushing. We have more to accomplish"

Christian Lewis hit the board and leaped 7.46 meters to place first overall. Teammate Lawrence Lambert placed third overall with a distance of 7.04 meters.

In the women's 100-meter dash, sophomore Ivory Davis won gold with a personal-best 13.73.

The distance trio capped off the women's events with Ruth Kibet winning the 5000m with 19:40.17. Mercy Kwambai picked up third coming in at 20:33.26 and Lillian Thou notched fifth finishing at 22:19.49.

Both the men's and women's 4x100 meter relay teams took third and ran season's best 40.69. The women's team finished at 46.98.

Other impressive performances came by way of the freshmen. Jamie Richardson placed second in the women's high jump with a distance of 1.67 meters. Malachi Johnson snagged third in the men's 400m crossing the line with a new personal best 47.70. Amari Wrightsil ran a new personal-best 55.09 to secure third.

The Tigers added a duo of runner up finishes , highlighted by Mathias Cheboi. Cheboi clocked in a new personal best at 4:02.10 in the men's 1500 meter and finished in 16:02.02 in the men's 5000 meter placing second in both.

The GSU track and field team combined to record 15 personal records at the Leon Johnson Invite:

  • Ivory Davis- Women's 100m Hurdles- 13.73

  • Rainey Anderson- Men's 110m Hurdles- 14.53
  • Amari Wrightsil- Women's 400m- 55.09
  • Malachi Johnson- Men's 400m- 47.70
  • Mathias Cheboi- Men's 1500m- 4:02.10
  • Jordyn Wyatt- Women's Hammer Throw- 38.43m
  • Imani McGee- Women's Hammer Throw- 32.07m
  • Pearl Moss- Women's High Jump- 1.62m
  • Anaya Jones- Women's Long Jump- 4.87m
  • Christian Lewis- Men's Long Jump- 7.46m
  • Imani McGee- Women's Shot Put- 11.57m

The Tigers also managed to posted four season-best marks as well.
