BATON ROUGE, La. | Julian Murphy drove in five runs and scored three, as the Grambling State University baseball team motored past Southern for 13-6 triumph to remain atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Western Division on Sunday afternoon at Lee-Hines Stadium.
The win improved GSU to 18-20 overall and 13-4 in SWAC play. Southern fell to 13-21 and 8-7 in conference play.
Murphy led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam in the during a seven-run fourth inning.
After the Jaguars built an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Grambling answered with two runs in the top of the second. Keanu Jacobs-Guishard smacked a one-out double to left field. Murphy put a ball in play which resulted in a throwing error on Southern, allowing Jacobs-Guishard to score from second to make it 3-1.
Later in the inning, Terry Burrell III lacked a single into right field, bringing Murphy around to score and cutting the gap to 3-2. The Jaguars tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame, extending its lead back to three runs, 5-2.
Grambling State put its foot on the gas after that, outscoring SU 11-1 over the next four innings. Southern starting pitcher, Jason Long (2-3), ran into trouble in the fourth inning, issuing four walks, including a bases loaded walk that brought the tying run home to make it 5-5.
Following a pitching change, GSU's Jacobs-Guishard drew another bases loaded walk to put the Tigers in front 6-5. Murphy then walloped a grand slam over the left field wall, putting GSU on top 10-5.
GSU never trailed again, cruising to the 13-6 victory.
Kerry Boykins (3-1) notched his third win of the season, working five innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Grambling State bullpen kept the Jaguars, limiting SU to no runs on four hits over the final four innings.
