GRAMBLING, La. | Cameron Bufford was the hero of the day for Grambling State, hitting a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, guiding the Tigers past Prairie View A&M, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W. E. Jones Park.
GSU (20-21 overall, 15-5 SWAC) erased a six-run deficit to rally from the win. Bufford's walk-off capped a 3-for-6 afternoon where he smacked a home run and drove in two runs.
Trevor Hatton and Keylon Mack were also catalysts in the victory, with Hatton driving in four runs while going 3-for-5 with a double and Mack going 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.
Prairie View A&M (17-25, 13-6) crafted a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Grambling State's bats came alive in the the fifth inning. After Nasir Frederick drew a leadoff walk, Mack smashed a homer over the right field wall, cutting the gap to 3-2. Bufford deposited the very next pitch over the batter's eye in centerfield, tying the game 3-3.
After a six-run sixth inning put the Panthers back in front 9-3, GSU settled down and began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a pitching change. Terry Burrell III reached base on a one-out single, advancing the second base on a steal. Following a fly out, Kyle Walker laced a single in to right centerfield, plating Burrell. Hatton scored Walker with a double to right, shrinking the deficit to 9-5. Mack made it 9-6 on an RBI.
Trailing 10-6 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers continued to cut into PVAMU's lead. With the bases loaded and two away, Walker singled in a run to make it 10-7. Hatton followed with a two-RBI single to left field, pulling GSU within one run, 10-9.
In the bottom of the ninth, Frederick led off with a walk. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Walker, Fredrerick scored the tying run on a single from Hatton. After PVAMU opted to intentionally walk Mack, Bufford ripped a single into centerfield, scoring the winning run from second.
Javier Martinez (1-3) earned his first win of the season after tossing three innings in a relief appearance. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out two and walking one.
Connor Rudy started the game for GSU, lasting six innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits to go along with three struts and a pair of walks.
