GRAMBLING, La. | In a battle featuring the top two teams on the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Western Division, the Grambling State University baseball team couldn't overcome Texas Southern, dropping both games on Saturday's doubleheader at Wilbert Ellis Field. GSU fell 14-6 in the first contest and lost 11-7 in the second game.
GSU dropped to 12-18 overall, 8-3 in the SWAC, while TSU improved to 21-11 and 7-4 in conference play.
Game 1
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Grambling State's bats kicked into gear. After the first two batters struck out, Terry Burrell III got on base with a single to centerfield, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Tiger Borom then doubled to to center, driving Burrell in for the tying run.
Later in the inning, Cameron Bufford laced an RBI single through the left side of the infield, giving GSU a 3-1 lead.
Texas Southern added two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game 3-3. An untimely throwing error from shortstop, with two outs, allowed the second run of the inning to score.
TSU took advantage of a pitching change in the eighth inning, building an 11-3 advantage. Texas Southern tacked on three more in the top of the ninth, pushing ahead 14-3.
GSU plated three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame.
Lorenzo Petersen got the start for Grambling State, delivering nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched. He surrendered three runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks.
Kendrick Bershell (3-1) was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of relief work.
Abraham Deleon (3-1) pitched seven innings in the win for TSU. He gave up three runs on four hits, while fanning 13 batters.
Borom went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Keylon Mack went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Game 2
In the second game, Texas Southern jumped out to a quick lead, going up 4-0 through the middle of the third inning.
Grambling State used a big bottom of the third to tie the game 4-4.
TSU tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning, to go on top 8-4 and never surrendered the lead, sailing to the 11-7 win.
Connor Rudy (4-4) was tabbed with loss, giving up nine runs on 10 hits in five innings pitched. He also struck out four and walked two.
Domenic Martinez (5-2) got the win on the mound for TSU, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with nine Ks and and two walks.
