LORMAN, Miss. | For the first time since 2001, the Grambling State University softball program reached the 30-win plateau, defeating Alcorn State 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon in its regular season finale.
India Wells had the hot bat for the for the Tigers, going 4-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Cadashia Collins and Kaytlyn Moore were also strong at the dish for GSU. Moore went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Collins was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Grambling State (30-20-1, 14-9 SWAC) got on the board first in the top of the third inning after an RBI triple from Wells gave GSU a 1-0.
GSU put their bats to work in the top of the sixth and adding four runs to its tally. Khali Malone laced an RBI single into centerfield to make it 2-0 Tigers. Shortly after, Anaiyah Fultz doubled to left center scoring Deija Russell. Later in the inning, Collins picked up a two-RBI single stretching Grambling's lead to 5-0.
Alcorn State (16-28) scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Marsha Hunt singled to the center bringing Kennedy Terry around to make it 5-1.
The Tigers tacked on one more run in the seventh inning when Moore singled to the right field scoring Ta'Mya Johnson and securing the 6-1 victory.
Dacia Richard (10-5) earned the win in the circle for GSU, working seven innings, giving up five hits and fanning four batters.

Grambling State awaits the pairings for the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball Tournament. The Tigers will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the SWAC West Division. Tournament play begins Tuesday, May 9 in Gulfport, Miss.
