PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | The Grambling State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams turned in eleven podium results in the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the PVAMU Track & Field Stadium.
The Tigers notched three first place finishes in the championships. Two of those wins belong to Kenya native, Mathias Cheboi. Cheboi took the title in Men 5000m (15:25.06) and the Men 10k (31:40.88). He also second in the Men 1500m ( 3:58.37) and the Men 3000 steeple (9:32.76).
Cheboi was named the Most Outstanding Performer after accounting for 36 of the GSU men's 69 points.
Ivory Davis represented for the women taking the champion title and a personal record in the women's 100m hurdle crossing the line at 13.57. Davis knocked .37 seconds off her qualifying preliminary time of 13.94.
Rainey Anderson placed second in the men's 110m hurdles and notched a personal record with a time of 13.95.
Ruth Kibet represented on the podium for the women's 10000m. Kibet placed third , crossing the line in 41:39.76.Mercy Kwambai came immediately after taking the fourth spot clocking in at 42:37.32. The duo had the same 3-4 finish in the women 5000m. Kibet came in third finishing in 19:49.29 and Kwambai placed fourth after crossing at 20:13.04.
Jamie Richardson tied for third in the women high jump with a distance of 1.67m.
For the men, Christian Lewis had a second place podium finish in the Men long jump with 7.59m
In the women's Heptathlon Shot Put Anaya Jones finished fourth with 10.29m and notched a personal record.
In the 4x100, GSU's team of Christian Lewis, CJ Guidry, Lawrence Lambert and Kimani Gardner earned a third place finish and a time of 40.45.
The women's 4x100 team of Tykira Glasco, Ivory Davis, Amari Wrightsil, and Kyla Blackett also took the third spot with a time of 46.11.
In the team standings, the Grambling State men claimed sixth place with 69 points. The Lady Tigers also turned in a sixth place finish with 64.5 points. Prairie View A&M claimed the womens SWAC titles and Alabama State claimed the men's SWAC title.
