GSU takes down No. 7 Mississippi Valley State

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team started the 2024 SWAC Women's Soccer Tournament with a victory against No. 7 Mississippi Valley State 3-1 Thursday afternoon at the PVAMU Soccer Complex. 

As the No. 2 seed entering the tournament, the Tigers are primed for a deep postseason run, building on their impressive victory in last year's SWAC Tournament and subsequent NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament appearance.

Morgan Johnson got Grambling State rolling with a set-piece goal in the 31st minute, assisted by Whitney Walker and Kennedy Farr.

Sophia Lezizidis added another goal in the 56th minute, assisted by Olivia Kowall and Khori Banks

The goalscoring continued with Lezizidis in the 74th minute, extending the Tigers lead to three. She was assisted by Kennedy Farr.

Valley State (2-9-4, 1-2-4) got on the board in the 84th minute with a solo run from Liana Bryant.

The victory reflected a strong performance by Grambling State, who now hold an overall record of 9-8-3 and a 6-2-0 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
Morgan Johnson opened the scoring in the 31st minute, followed by a goal from Sophia Lezizidis in the 56th minute. Lezizidis bagged herself a brace in the 74th minute. MVS scored a goal in the 84th minute.

  • Grambling State took 19 shots in total with 11 on target.
  • Mississippi Valley State had 13 shots with eight on target.
  • GSU took seven corner kicks. 
  • Valley State attempted four corner kick.
  • Grambling were called for 10 fouls
