Grambling State Drops Contest versus Southeastern Louisiana

GRAMBLING, La. | Mikale Stevenson and Chilaydrien Newton led Grambling State with 16 points apiece in the Tigers 75-65 loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Monday night on Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
GSU (2-7) struggled to slow down SLU's hot shooting with the Lions connecting on 56.3 percent from the field, including shooting 40.0 percent from behind the arc.  
 
Grambling State shot 46 percent from the field. The Tigers also drained 43.8 percent of its three-point attempts. 
 
Stevenson scored 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting with four assists, three rebounds and two steals. 
 
Newton relied on the three ball to score his 16 points, knocking down 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc. The redshirt-freshman added a rebound and an assist to his stat line. 
 
Grambling State got off to a promising start, building a 16-7 lead with 13:57 remaining in the first half. Southeastern Louisiana (5-6) swung momentum its way at the point, outscoring GSU 33-13 the rest of the half to carry a 40-29 lead into halftime.  
 
SLU's Sam Hines Jr. gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 58-40, on a layup with 9:21 left in the game. 
 
The Tigers tried to battle back late, eventually shrinking the deficit to single digits, 66-57, with just over three minutes to go. GSU could get no closer to the Lions, however. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State shot 46 percent from the field (23-of-50) and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from three-point range. The Tigers were 12-of-16 at the free throw line (75.0 percent). 
  • GSU grabbed 14 rebounds.
  • The Tigers committed six turnovers. 
  • Grambling State scored 24 points in the paint, 21 bench points, 12 points off turnovers, 11 fastbreak points and two second chance points. 
  • Southeastern Louisiana shot 56.3 percent from the floor (27-of-48) and 40 percent from behind the arc (8-of-20). The Lions were 13-of-17 at the charity stripe (76.5 percent) 
  • SLU grabbed 35 boards.
  • The Lions committed 16 turnovers.
  • SLU scored 30 points in the paint, eight bench points, six fastbreak points, six points off turnovers and six second chance points.

Grambling State travels to Uncasville, Conn. for the Toyota Chris Paul HBCU Classic presented by Walmart at the Mohegan Sun Arena. GSU faces Delaware State on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. EST and Norfolk State on Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. EST.
