Thomas Homers in GSU’s Loss at Louisiana-Monroe

MONROE, La. | Freshman Martavius Thomas hit his second homerun of the year, but it wasn't enough to spark Grambling State in its 13-3 loss in seven innings to Louisiana-Monroe.
 
GSU (1-3) struggle to find a rhythm at the plate, scratching out three hits in the contest. 
 
Thomas was the bright spot for the Tiger bats, going 2-for-3 with a single and a 2-run homer in the fifth inning. Tiger Borom logged the other hit for GSU going 1-for-3 with a double. 
 
Carlos Peguero (0-1) got the start for GSU and was tagged with the loss for after working 4.0 innings and surrendering five runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out three batters. 
 
ULM was led offensively by Easton Winfield who went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBI. On the mound, Warhawks' starter Seaver Sheets (1-0) racked up four Ks while allowing one run on two hits and a walk. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grambling State got thing going in the first inning. Martavius Thomas opened with a leadoff single. Tiger Borom moved him over the third base with a double to right field.  Kyle Walker's sacrifice fly scored Thomas from third, giving GSU a 1-0 lead.
  • ULM responded in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homer courtesy of J. Haggard, putting the Warhawks in front 2-1. ULM stretched that lead to 5-1 with a three-run fourth inning.
  • In the top of the fifth, Thomas smacked a 2-run shot over the left field wall for his team-leading second home run of the season, cutting the deficit down to 5-3.
  • That was the final hit of the game for the Tigers as GSU's bats went cold the rest of the way. ULM on the other hand began to find its stride at the plate, pumping out eight runs in the final three innings to hand Grambling State the loss. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 
  • Grambling State finished with three runs on three hits and three walks. The Tigers committed two errors and stranded six runners.
  • Louisiana-Monroe recorded 13 runs on 10 hits and nine walks. They left seven runners on base.
  • Three pitchers made relief appearances for GSU. Jeremiah Newman, Brett Washington and Miguel Baez combined for 2.1 innings, eight runs, six hits and six walks.

Grambling State travels to Vero Beach, Fla. to take on Florida A&M in the Andre Dawson Classic beginning on Friday, February 23. First pitch is scheduled 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on MLB Network.
