Grambling State Softball Sweeps Alcorn State in Doubleheader

LORMAN, Miss. | The Grambling State opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on a strong note, beating Alcorn State 1-0 in game and 10-6 in game two on Monday afternoon.

Game 1 – How It Happened
  • The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel that saw the Tigers outlast the Braves 1-0.
  • Dacia Richard (4-2) was strong in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout. She struck out five batters while limiting Alcorn State to four hits.
  • ASU's K. Parker (2-7) was tagged with loss after surrendering one run on two hits. She notched eight Ks.
  • The lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Nyah Jones reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing all the way to third base on a throwing error. She ended up scoring on a passed ball, giving GSU the 1-0 lead and ultimately the win.
  • Kamryn Broussard and Lexi Hope led the Tigers at the plate, both going 1-for-3.
Game 2 – How It Happened
  • If the first game was a defensive battle, the second game flipped the script with GSU's bats waking up. The Tigers plated 10 runs on nine hits.
  • Tavia Leadon got things started in the first inning with an RBI single, giving Grambling State a 1-0 lead.
  • In the third inning, Alcorn State jumped in front with a pair of runs to make it a 2-1 game. The Tigers kicked into high gear after that, scoring five runs in the top of the fourth.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded, Z'Natria Evans put a ball in play that was mishandled at second base, scoring two runs, and pushing GSU back in front 3-2.
  • Leadon made the Braves pay for the miscue, walloping a 3-run homer to make it a 6-2 game. GSU followed the fourth inning onslaught with a two-run fifth inning.
  • Chrsitalyn Higgins scored GSU's seventh run on a passed ball. Broussard smacked an RBI single, stretching Grambling's advantage to 8-2.
  • Alcorn State found a bit of a rhythm in the sixth inning, plating four runs to pull within two runs. Grambling State's Peighton Krushall dashed the Braves' comeback hopes with a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh, giving the Tigers a 10-6 lead.
  • Richard entered the game in the bottom of the frame and shut the door on Alcorn.
  • Jordan Hodge (2-1) got the win for the Tigers, striking out five batters in 5.1 innings of work. She surrendered six runs on six hits.
