Grambling State Downs Arlington Baptist 6-1

RUSTON, La. | The Grambling State University softball team got back in the winning column with a 6-1 victory over Arlington Baptist on Tuesday night at the Ruston Sports Complex. 
 
GSU banged out 11 hits in the win and erased an early 1-0 deficit with six unanswered runs to cruise to the win. Katelynn Walls and Aniyah Lee led GSU at the plate, both picking up a pair of hits. 
 
Jordan Hodge (3-2) notched the win in a relief appearance, holding ABU hitless and scoreless in 3.0 innings of work. Erin Gibs earned her second save of the year, allowing no runs on two hits. She struck out one batter.
 
Dacia Richard set the tone in the circle, giving up just one run on three hits with two Ks in her start. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arlington Baptist got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single by 
  • Grambling State found some daylight in the bottom of the fourth when Khali Malone ripped a two-out RBI double into left field to give GSU a 2-1 lead. Deija Russell brought Malone around to score on a single to right field, extending the Tigers' lead to 3-1.
  • Kamryn Broussard's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning made it 4-1 GSU. 
  • In the sixth inning, a throwing error by ABU allowed Grambling State's fifth run to cross the plate. Kendyll Turpeau's RBI single wrapped up the scoring, giving the Tigers a 6-1 cushion. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State scored six runs on 11 hits. GSU left six runners on base.
  • Arlington Baptist scored one run on five hits. ABU stranded four runners and committed one error. 
  • Khali Malone registered a game-high two RBI. 
  • Melissa Cabrera was tagged with the loss for the Patriots. She pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. 
 
UP NEXT
Grambling State returns to the GSU Softball Complex for a four-game weekend series versus Alcorn State. The series is slated the begin on Friday with a doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. start. GSU and ASU will wrap up the series on Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
