Grambling State Splits Doubleheader with Texas Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team split the first two games of its weekend series with Texas Southern, losing game one 17-12 before bouncing back with a 16-8 win in game two. 
 
GSU moved to 17-22 overall and 14-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), while TSU moved to 19-20 overall and 15-4 in SWAC play. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
 
Grambling State hit four home runs in the opening game of the series, but that display of power wasn't enough to overcome and even more impressive offensive showing from Texas Southern. 
 
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Kyle Walker got the Grambling State offense going with a solo homer to cut the early deficit to 2-1.
 
GSU took the lead in the bottom of the second when Trevor Hatton smashed a towering two-run home run over the left wall to make it a 3-2 game. 
 
With GSU leading 4-3 in the sixth inning, Hatton hit his second two-run homer of the game, give the Grambling State a 6-3.
 
GSU's lead didn't last however, as Texas Southern used a six-run seventh to take a 9-6 lead. The game was then halted due to rain and resumed on Saturday afternoon. 
 
After the game resumed in the bottom of the seventh, Cameron Bufford smacked GSU's fourth homer of the game, this time a two-run shot over the left field wall, cutting TSU's lead to 9-8.
 
Texas Southern responded with a five-run eighth, pushing its lead to 14-8.
 
Grambling State pulled back within striking distance in the bottom of the inning, adding four runs to make it a 14-12 game. However, TSU put the game away with three runs in the ninth inning. 
Mason Martinez (7-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked four in 6.1 innings. 
 
How It Happened – Game 2
 
Grambling State used a big third inning rally to sprint past Texas Southern in the second game of the day. 
 
After falling into a 6-0 hole after two and a half innings, Grambling State used an 11-run third innings to take a lead that it wouldn't relinquish. GSU outscored TSU 16-2 from the bottom of the third to the end of the game. 
 
With the bases loaded and GSU trailing 6-3, Jose Vargas cleared the bases with a three-RBI double that tied the game. Tiger Borom's RBI single gave Grambling State its first lead of the game at 7-6. GSU led 11-6 heading at the end of three. 
 
In the fourth inning, Borom smashed a two-run homer that extended GSU's grip on the lead to 13-6. 
 
Texas Southern never recovered from the scoring barrage by Grambling State. 
 
Phillip Bryant (4-2) after tossing 6.0 innings. He gave up seven runs on six hits and six walks. He struck out one batter.

Grambling State closes its weekend series with Texas Southern on Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
