PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team suffered a 9-5 setback in its series finale versus Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon.
GSU fell to 12-17 overall and 9-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), while PVAMU moved to 14-21 and 5-7 in conference play.
Grambling State held a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, but saw its lead disappear down the stretch thanks to six unanswered runs by the Panthers.
Tiger Borom led GSU offensively, going 3-for-5.
Carlos Peguero (1-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits. He struck out two batters and walked a pair.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Prairie View A&M's Benjamin Ybarra's RBI triple in the bottom of the second inning got the scoring started. Lee Allen brought into score on a grounder to shortstop, giving PVAMU a 2-0 lead.
- GSU got on the scoreboard in the in the top of the third. With Martvius Thomas on first base and Jose Vargas at third, Thomas took off and stole second. Vargas scored on the throw to make it a 2-1 game. Kyle Walker ended up bringing Thomas home to score on an RBI single, tying the game 2-2 heading into the bottom of the frame.
- Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fourth, Julian Murphy squared the game up with an RBI single ripped down the third base line.
- Grambling State took the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Tiger Borom stole third and advanced home due to an error of the throw. Aries Gardner smacked an RBI single into centerfield, giving GSU a 5-3 lead. PVAMU added a run in the bottom half of the inning, trimming the Tigers' lead to 5-4.
- Prairie View A&M took a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Jeremiah Newman replaced Peguero on the mound. However, Newman struggled to with command of his pitches. With the bases loaded he issues a walk, extending PVAMU's advantage to 7-5.
- After Brett Washington entered the game in relief of Newman, Paul Castro hit a 2-RBI making it 9-5 in favor of the Panthers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State finished with five runs on 10 hits. GSU left seven runners on base and committed one error.
- Prairie View A&M recorded nine runs on 10 hits. They committed two errors and left three runners stranded.
- GSU was 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position (.308)
- PVAMU was 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position (.444)
- Matthew Krall (3-1) was the winning pitcher. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
