GSU Drops Series Finale to PVAMU

GRAMBLING, La. | It was rough going for the Grambling State University baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park, as the Tigers suffered a 16-3 loss in seven innings to Prairie View A&M.

The loss didn't shuffle the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings, however. GSU maintained second place in the division and now sports a 20-25 overall record with a 17-8 mark in conference play. Prairie View improved to 26-24 and 15-9 in the SWAC to hold onto third.

Charles Jackson (1-2) got the start on the mound for the Tigers, surrendering seven runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. He struck out three batters and issue a walk.

GSU used five pitchers in total, but struggled to extinguish PVAMU's bats, allowing 16 runs on 19 hits.

Grambling State's offense was also uncharacteristically quiet, scattering five hits in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Prairie View A&M got going early, plating five runs in the opening inning. Marshal Jonas and Trenton Bush hit a pair of RBI singles in the third inning to stretch the Panthers' lead to 7-0.
  • Julian Murphy got GSU on the board in the bottom of the frame, chopping an RBI single over third base to make it a 7-1 game.
  • After a solo homer by PVAMU grew the Panthers' advantage to 8-1 in the fourth inning, Grambling State answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. GSU's second run came courtesy of a bases loaded balk. Ashton Inman followed that with RBI single to make it 8-3.
  • Prairie View A&M closed the game with eight unanswered runs to secure the run-rule win.
