BATON ROUGE, La. | James Brown brought home the gold for Grambling State track & field in the men's long jump on day one of the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships on Thursday afternoon at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Brown snagged first place in the event after leaping a personal best distance of 7.65m. His gold medal on Thursday bolstered his already strong resume as he also claimed the SWAC Indoor long jump title earlier this year.
Lawrence Lambert secured a 1-2 finish for the Tigers in the event, coming in second with a distance of 7.42m.
Christian Lewis landed in 10
th place with a jump of 7.04m.
On the women's side,
Shatara Johnson claimed a silver medal in the long jump with a personal best of 5.96m. Shamaya Joiner (5.78m) and
Angel Sanders (5.78m) snagged top 10 spots, coming in fifth and sixth place.
In the women's 200m preliminaries,
Amari Wrightsil claimed a spot in Saturday's final with a qualifying time of 24.72, the seventh fastest on Thursday.
In the men's hammer throw, Jean Dixon clinched ninth place with a toss of 43.11m.
In the men's decathlon, Anthony Davis sits in ninth place. In the women's heptathlon
Anaya Jones in also in ninth place.
In the men's standings, Grambling State in currently in fourth place with 18 points. Texas Southern is currently in first place with 40 points.
In the women's team standings, GSU is in sixth place with 15 points. Prairie View A&M is in first with 38 points.
