ATLANTA, Ga. | Just when it seemed the curtain was closing on Grambling State's magical baseball season, the Tigers battled through adversity to claim its 10
th Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Title, defeating Jackson State 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Russ-Chandler Stadium.
GSU (26-26) overcame a 5-4 deficit in the ninth inning when
Trevor Hatton's RBI single tied the game and an errant throw allowed Grambling State to plate the winning run, sending the Tigers to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.
Grambling State got a solid performance from its pitching staff.
Javier Martinez (4-1) earned the win in a relief appearance, working 2.2 innings and striking out three batters. He surrendered one run on two hits.
Carlos Peguero got the start on the mound, working one full inning.
Mason Martinez relieved him, pitching 3.2 innings and holding JSU to one run on two hits.
Phillip Bryant contributed 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
The victory was
Davin Pierre's first title as head coach of the GSU baseball program and first championship for the program since 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Kyle Walker hit an RBI single just past JSU's third baseman, scoring Chris Marcellus to make it a 2-1 game.
- Grambling State took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Following a leadoff single by Julian Murphy, Ashton Inman moved him over to third base with a double down the rightfield line. Trevor Hatton then pulled a bases-clearing double down the left field line, scoring Murphy and Inman to give GSU its first lead of the day, 3-2. A Marcellus bloop RBI single into shallow centerfield, extending the advantage to 4-2.
- Jackson State's Joseph Eichelberger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, trimming GSU's lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning.
- In the seventh inning, JSU's Sebastian Cabeza drew a bases-loaded walk, tying the game 4-4.
- Jackson State took the lead in the top of the ninth when Eichelberger stole home on a strikeout.
- In the bottom of the ninth inning, Walker got GSU's rally kickstarted with a leadoff single and moved to second after a throwing error.. JSU opted to intentionally walk Cameron Bufford. Murphy advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Inman was also intentionally walked to load the bases.
- Hatton became the hero of the day when he hit a grounder that was fielded by relief pitcher Christian Womble. Womble attempted to get the force out at home, but the ball skipped away to the backstop allowing two runs to cross and secure the title for Grambling State.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State scored six runs on eight hits. GSU left nine runners on base.
- Trevor Hatton went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
- Kyle Walker went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
- Jackson State scored five runs on nine hits. JSU committed four errors. Jackson State left 12 runners on base.
- JSU stole four bases.
