COLLEGE STATION, Texas | Cameron Bufford and
Trevor Hatton wrapped up their collegiate careers with a pair of home runs as Grambling State fell to No. 22 Louisiana 12-5 in the Bryan-College Station Regional at Blue Bell Park on Saturday afternoon.
Hatton went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Bufford was 1-for-4 with an RBI. GSU scored five runs on eight hits.
Much like Friday's game against Texas A&M, GSU stumbled through the early innings before settling down. The Ragin Cajuns scored 12 runs on 14 hits and three errors.
Grambling State concludes the 2024 season 26-28 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, Grambling State starting pitcher Miguel Baez (0-2) ran into trouble in the second inning. The Ragin' Cajuns put up four runs on four hit and five walks. Carlos Peguero relieved Baez with two away and got the Tigers out of the inning.
- Grambling State got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Jose Vargas slashed an RBI single down the left line to make it a 4-1 game. GSU loaded the bases with one out, but a pickoff at first base and a strikeout extinguished the Tigers threat.
- Louisiana took advantage of the missed scoring opportunity in the top of the third, plating four more runs to grow its lead to 8-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Cameron Bufford walloped a solo home run high over the left field wall, trimming UL's lead to 8-2. It was Bufford's 10th homer of the year.
- The Tigers pulled even closer in the bottom of the sixth when Trevor Hatton hit a 2-run homer to left centerfield, making a 9-4 game.
- With the Ragin' Cajuns ahead 12-4 in the bottom of the ninth, GSU added one more to its tally on an RBI single by Ashton Inman.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State scored five runs on eight hits and left nine runners stranded. GSU batted .235 as a team (8-of-34).
- Louisiana scored eight runs on 14 hits. The Ragin' Cajuns batted .359 (14-of-39).
- Peguero entered the game in relief of Baez. J. Martinez struck out one batter in 1.1 innings of work. He allowed four runs on four hits.
- Jeremiah Newman went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
- Brett Washington also saw action the mound, fanning one batter and giving up two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
- Esteban Tavarez pitched 0.1 innings.
- Andrew Herrmann (6-3) earned the win in relief for Louisiana. He gave up three runs on three hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out three and walked two.
