Grambling State Falls to Texas Southern in Overtime Thriller

HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University men's basketball team fell to Texas Southern 71-66 in overtime at the H&PE Arena on Monday night. 
 
GSU fell to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the SWAC while Texas Southern moved to 4-11 overall and 1-1 in SWAC play.
 
Antwan Burnett and Ernest Ross paced GSU offensively, both scoring 13 points apiece. Burnett, who returned to the lineup after battling an injury, was 5-for-8 from the field adding eight rebounds and an assist to his stat line. 
 
Trailing 16-13 with 11:36 left in the first half, Kintavious Dozier splashed a 3-pointer that sparked a 9-0 run that gave GSU a 22-16 cushion with 7:49 on the clock. 
 
An 8-2 run by Texas Southern tied the game 24-24 at the 4:42 mark. TSU ended up taking a 32-30 lead into halftime. 
 
Grambling State kept within striking distance of the Texas Southern in the second half, countering every punch that TSU threw. 
 
After Texas Southern nabbed its largest lead of the contest, 49-42 with 8:25 to play, PJ Eason answered with a mid-range jumper to make a 5-point game. After a missed layup on TSU next trip up the court, Eason slammed an alley-oop pass from Mikale Stevenson, cutting the deficit to 49-46. Dozier pulled GSU within a point on a layup. 
 
After TSU grew its lead to 57-50, Grambling State clamped down using a 7-0 run to close regulation and forced the extra period. 
 
In overtime, GSU grabbed a 64-60 lead with 2:06 to play. Texas Southern seized control from that moment, outscoring a Grambling State 11-2 over the final two minutes of the game. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State shot 33.3 percent from the field (22-of-66) and 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from three-point range. The GSU was 17-of-22 at the free throw line (77.3 percent). 
  • GSU grabbed 51 rebounds.
  • Grambling State committed 18 turnovers. 
  • GSU scored 24 points in the paint, 23 bench points, 16 points off turnovers, 10 second chance points and five fastbreak points. 
  • Texas Southern shot 39.4 percent from the floor (26-of-66) and 33.3 percent from behind the arc (8-of-24). TSU was 11-of-14 at the charity stripe (78.6 percent) 
  • TSU grabbed 37 boards.
  • Texas Southern committed 14 turnovers.
  • TSU scored 28 points in the paint, 18 bench points, 12 fastbreak points, eight points off turnovers, and four second chance points.
  • Texas Southern's Zaire Hayes scored a game-high 24 points with three rebounds and a steal.
