Turnover Plague GSU in Homecoming Loss to Texas Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University football team suffered a 21-20 homecoming loss to Texas Southern on Saturday night at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

GSU (3-3 overall, 0-2 SWAC) had several promising drives end in turnovers, including a late fourth quarter fumble inside the Texas Southern 5-yard line. In total, Grambling State committed four turnovers, three fumbles and one interception.

GSU outgained TSU 358-317 in total offense.

Ashton Frye got the start at quarterback for Grambling State, he completed 9-of-11 passes for 81 yards. He also rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

A'Myne Darensbourg and C'zavian Teasett also saw action on Saturday. Teasett, who battled back from injury, entered in the fourth quarter, going 4-of-4 for 62 yards.

The G-Men put together one of their best rushing games of the season, rumbling for 215 yards and two TDs. Tre Bradford led the way with 120 yards on 11 attempts.

Grambling opened the game on a high note with Markel Linzer intercepting Texas Southern's KJ Cooper on the second play of the game, setting GSU up at the TSU 48-yard line. The G-Emn turned that takeaway into points when Frye scampered 15 yards for a TD on the ensuing drive.

Grambling opted to attempt a fake field goal on the PAT, but was stopped, setting the score at 6-0 with 8:42 left in the first quarter.

On GSU's second drive of the game, the G-Men drove deep into TSU territory, but a fumble by Frye allowed Texas Southern to recover at its own 8-yard line.

In the second quarter, Texas Southern took a 7-6 lead after Cooper connected with Trenton Leary on a 7-yard TD pass with 9:03 on the clock. With 1:30 remaining until halftime, TSU's Athean Renfro ran for a 60-yard touchdown to make it 14-6 just before halftime.

Tony Phillips Jr. returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards to the TSU 35-yard line, putting Grambling in position to score before the break. Following a 35-yard completion to Tyson George to the 1-yard line, Eaton pushed into the end zone to make it 14-13 game heading into the locker room.

Jay'Shaun Johnson electrified the homecoming crowd with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the third period and give GSU a 20-14 advantage.

Texas Southern responded immediately, driving 50 yards on six plays to take a 21-20 lead with 11:53 to go in the third.

Midway through the third period, a fumble resulted Frye being injured and forcing freshman A'Myne Darensbourg into action.

Neither team could muster much offense until Teasett entered the game and engineered a masterful drive, setting the G-Men up for the go-ahead score at the TSU 4-yard line. However, Clyde McClendon Jr. fumbled with TSU pouncing on the loose ball with 5:40 remaining.

With GSU only having one timeout remining, Texas Southern was able to run time of the clock and secure the win.
