LAS VEGAS, Nev. | The Grambling State football team shocked the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), defeating 12
th ranked Jackson State 26-24 at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
GSU (5-3 overall, 2-2 SWAC) used a 44-yard field goal by
Josh McCormick with 21 seconds remaining, handing JSU (5-2, 3-1 SWAC) its first conference loss and secure Grambling State's firs win over an FCS Top 25 team since 2016.
GSU rolled up 365 yards of total offense, with 243 coming through the air.
Starting quarterback C'Zavian Teasett was 16-of-26 for 232 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. He added 31 rushing yards and a TD on eight carries.
Running back
Tre Bradford once again led the run game for GSU, rushing for 58 yards on 11 carries. As a team Grambling State ran for 122 yards.
Blake Davis led the GSU defense in tackles with a season-high nine total tackles with five solo stops.
Trailing 10-0 with 1:56 left in the first half, Grambling State got on the board with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Teasett to
Covadis Knighten. The PAT was blocked, setting the score at 10-6.
After the G-Men forced a fourth down with nine seconds left in the half, a blocked punt by
Clyde McClendon Jr. set the Tigers up for another scoring opportunity at the Jackson State 7-yard line.
Theodore Caballero connected on a 24-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 10-9 heading into the locker room.
Grambling State took its first lead of the game with 5:17 to go in the third quarter. Teasett capped a 12-play, 83-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run to make it 16-10 GSU.
After GSU's defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs to take possession at its own 32-yard line near the end of the third quarter. The G-Men converted that turnover into points when Teasett threw a 27-yard TD strike to
Andrew Frazier, extending the advantage to 23-10 with 12:06 left in the fourth quarter.
Jackson State answered that score with a 62-yard TD reception by Nathan Rembert to make it 23-17 with 9:41 to go.
JSU pushed ahead 24-23 on 1-yard QB keeper by Jared Lockhart with 2:15 to play.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jackson State kicked the ball out of bounds, setting the G-Men up at their own 35-yard line. Teasett moved Grambling to midfield with a 7-yard pass to Knighten and a 9-yard scramble before exiting the game with an injury.
True freshman A'Myne Darensbourg took and pushed Grambling State to the JSU 27-yard line where the G-Men faced a 4
th and 1.
McCormick booted a 44-yard field goal, putting GSU in front 26-24 with 21 seconds to play, ultimately sealing the victory for Grambling.
Jackson State put up 448 yards of total offense. JSU threw for 250 and ran for 198.
