Grambling State Drops Contest to Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team fell to Southern 71-64 on Saturday afternoon at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center.
 
GSU fell to 9-18 overall and 6-8 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Southern improved to 18-9 and 13-1 in the SWAC. The loss also marked the first time that the Tigers were swept in the season series with the Jaguars since the 2016-17 campaign.
 
Kintavious Dozier led three Tigers into double figures, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting with three rebounds and a steal. Chilaydrien Newton added 13 points and Mikale Steveson tacked on 11 points. 
 
Southern got off to a quick start, sprinting out toa quick 9-0 lead. Following a timeout, Newton gave the Tigers their first points of the day with a 3-pointer. Dozier gave GSU its first lead of the game, 19-18, with on a deep three with 10:38 remining in the half. 
 
GSU trailed 38-37 at the break. 
 
The Tigers found a rhythm early in the second half, opening up a 45-40 lead with 17:01 to play. The Jaguars, however, used a 13-2 run to take a 53-47 lead with 12:13 on the clock. 
 
Grambling State could never kick back into game as the SU grew its advantage to 13 points, 65-52, with 5:34 to go. 
 
Southern was paced by Jordan Johnson who scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 from field, including going 6-of-8 from behind the arc. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling State shot 41.7 percent from the field (20-of-48) and 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from three-point range. GSU was 19-of-22 at the free throw line (86.4 percent). 
  • Grambling State grabbed 28 rebounds.
  • GSU committed 10 turnovers. 
  • The Tigers scored 20 points in the paint, 14 bench points, nine second chance points, six points off turnovers and six fastbreak points.
  • Southern shot 42.6 percent from the floor (26-of-61) and 52.9 percent from behind the arc (9-of-17). SU was 10-of-16 at the charity stripe (62.5 percent) 
  • The Jaguars pulled down 34 rebounds.
  • Southern committed six turnovers.
  • SU scored 36 bench points, 17 points off turnovers, 11 second chance points, 10 points in the paint and 10 fastbreak points.
