GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team dropped a nailbiter to Alcorn State, 60-53, on Monday night on Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
The Tigers fell to 6-16 overall and 3-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Braves improved to 5-16 and 5-4 in SWAC play.
Kintavious led three GSU players into double figures, scoring 12 points with three rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Ernest Ross came three rebounds shy of a double-double, grabbing seven rebounds and contributing 11 points.
Mikale Stevenson added 10 points with a season-high six steals to go along with three assists and two boards.
The majority of the first half was close with Alcorn State holding a slim 15-13 lead just under 10 minutes remaining until halftime. The hot shooting of ASU's Keionte Cornelius helped the Braves put Grambling State into a 34-24 hole heading into halftime.
The Braves took its largest lead of the game, 41-28 with 15:33 to play, Grambling State slowly started to work its way back into the game. The Tigers used a 10-2 run to make it a 43-38 game with 10:38 remaining.
With 5:11 left to play, a steal by
James Flippin led to a transition dunk by
Chilaydrien Newton to cut GSU's deficit to 52-51. The Tigers, however, couldn't push ahead of the Braves as ASU closed the game with an 8-2 run.
Cornelius led Alcorn State with 14 points with a rebound and an assist. He was 4-of-7 from three-point range.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 36.5 percent from the field (19-of-52) and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point range. GSU was 10-of-12 at the free throw line (83.3 percent).
- The Tigers grabbed 20 rebounds.
- Grambling State committed 12 turnovers.
- GSU scored 28 points in the paint, 24 points off turnovers, 15 fastbreak points, 14 bench points and nine second chance points,
- Alcorn State shot 50.0 percent from the floor (23-of-56) and 58.3 percent from behind the arc (7-of-12). ASU was 7-of-10 at the charity stripe (63.6 percent)
- Alcorn State pulled down 34 rebounds.
- The Braves committed 19 turnovers.
- Alcorn State scored 26 bench points, 24 points in the paint, 14 points off turnovers, 10 second chance points and four fastbreak points.
