HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Grambling State University baseball team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with an strong 14-3 victory over Alabama A&M at Bulldog Baseball Field on Friday afternoon.
Grambling State (5-11, 1-0 SWAC) delivered a dominant offensive performance, recording 14 runs on 13 hits.
Nyan Hayes, powered the Tigers with a three-run home run, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two walks.
Aries Gardner and
Trey Bridges each contributed two hits, with Gardner driving in three runs.
The Tigers scoring started in the third inning and gained momentum with multi-run efforts in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth frames. Grambling exploded for five runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
GSU starting pitcher
Mason Martinez (1-1) secured the win with a strong outing, tossing 7.1 innings while allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Javier Martinez closed out the final two outs, surrendering just one hit.
Alabama A&M (4-13, 0-1 SWAC) struggled to generate runs, despite tallying 10 hits. The Bulldogs plated all three of their runs in the eighth inning. Jaiden Proper (0-3) took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in five innings.
