GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball
team dropped its midweek contest to Northwestern State 12-9 on Tuesday evening at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
GSU (7-12) nearly erased a 10-1 deficit, but couldn't overcome a sluggish first four innings.
The Tigers registered six hits in the contest with
Aries Gardner leading the way going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
Keanu Jacobs-Guishard and
Trey Bridges also registered hits for GSU with Jacobs-Guishard going 2-for-4 with two RBI and Bridges 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI.
Nick Robinson (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and two walks. He didn't record an out in his appearance.
After a five-run top of the first for NSU (12-8), Bridges got the Tigers on the board with a solo homer to centerfield, his first of the season. Northwestern State's Rocco Gump responded with a one-out solo shot in the top of the second to push NSU's lead to 6-1.
Trailing 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth, a two-RBI single by Jacobs-Guishard pulled GSU with seven.
A bases loaded wild pitch thrown by NSU reliever Adam Alexis made it a 10-4 game. Gardner drove in another run with a single up the middle of the infield, allowing
Martavius Thomas to score from third base.
After the Demons added another run in the top of the sixth, the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Bridges was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded, cutting NSU's lead to 11-6.
Gardner blasted a leadoff solo homer in the seventh inning to trim GSU's deficit to 11-7. It was a second long ball of the year. The Tigers tacked on another run in the eighth inning to a make it 11-8 game.
Both teams traded runs in the ninth, but GSU couldn't close the gap any further, falling 12-9.
Gump led Northwestern State at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. As a team, the Demons registered eight hits.
Kevin Robinson (4-0) was given the win after going 1.0 innings and giving up one run on one hit.

Grambling State returns to action on Friday, March 21 when it opens a three-game weekend home series with Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Texas Southern. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
Saturday's game will begin at 3 p.m. and Sunday's series finales is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
