Grambling State Outlasts PVAMU in Extra Innings

Box Score PRIAIRE VIEW, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team needed extra innings to earn a series opening 6-5 win over Prairie View A&M at Tankersley Field on Friday afternoon.
 
Chris Marcellus led GSU (13-19 overall, 8-5 SWAC) going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI. Cameron Hill also utilized the long ball, going 1-for-3 with a solo homer.  
 
Javier Martinez (3-3) earned the win in a relief appearance, allowing no runs on one hit in two innings of work. Payton Allen was also strong out of the bullpen, giving up no runs on one and fanning three batters in 3.2 innings.
 
Mason Martinez got the start for Gambling State, striking out five batters in 4.1 innings. He surrendered five runs on nine hits. 
 
Hill got the Tigers on the board first with a solo shot in the top of the first. Chris Marcellus smacked a solo homer in the top of the second to give GSU a 2-0 lead. 
 
Prairie View responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, tying the game 2-2. 
 
The Tigers regained the lead in the third inning.  With runners on first and second, Chenar Brown hit an RBI single in the right field. Marcellus immediately followed that with another RBI single that gave GSU a 4-2 advantage. 
 
PVAMU answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to knot the game up at 4-4. The Panthers briefly took a 5-4 lead in the fifth.

The game remained tied until the top of the 10th. Following a one out single by Aries Gardner, Lamarcus Jones entered to pinch run. A balk allowed Jones to advance to second. After Hill drew walk, he and Jones moved to second and third base on a passed ball. 
 
Prairie View A&M decided to intentionally walk Brown and load the bases. However, a second balk allowed Jones to score the go-ahead run. PVAMU struck out GSU's final two batters of the inning. 
 
GSU Relief pitcher Javier Martinez secured the win with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the inning.

Grambling State continues its series at Prairie View A&M on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Tankersley Field.
