Hayes Homers in GSU’s Loss at FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Grambling State's Nyan Hayes hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to earn a second straight win on Florida A&M, falling 11-4 on Saturday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field. 
 
The loss dropped GSU to 19-20 overall and 14-6 in the SWAC while FAMU improved to 20-20 and 14-6 in conference. 
 
The G-Men racked up nine hits in the game with Cameron Hill going 2-for-5. Hayes was 1-for-5 with two RBI on the home run. 
 
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, Grambling State's Martavius Thomas reached base on after being hit by a pitch. Thomas shifted over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaeanu Jacobs-Guishard. A pair of wild pitches allowed Thomas to score the Tigers first run of the day and tie the score 1-1. 
 
The Tigers pushed ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning when Thomas ripped an RBI double to left field. 
 
The Rattlers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth to grab a 3-2 lead. 
 
Hayes gave Grambling State the lead once again in the top of the sixth when he smashed a two-run homer over the left centerfield wall to make it a 4-3 game.
 
In the bottom of the frame, FAMU's Brody Poppell hit a two-RBI double to seesaw the Rattler back in front, 5-4.
 
The Tigers couldn't get back on track after that as the Rattlers added six more runs over the final three innings to take the 11-4 win.
 
Randy Reyes got the start for GSU (3-4) git the start for the Tigers. He pitched five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on four hits. He struck out two and walked four. 
 
Payton Allen (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 K, 1 BB) Javier Martinez (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 K, 2 BB) and Brett Washington (1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB) all made relief appearances for GSU. 
 
FAMU's Carson Kelly (4-1) picked up the win in a a relief appearance. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on threes to go along with three strikeouts and two walks.
