Shaw Fans Eight, GSU Falls to BCU 9-3

Grambling, La. | Grambling State pitcher Trenton Shaw delivered eight strikeouts as the Tigers dropped it second game in a row to Bethune-Cookman, falling 9-3 on Saturday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park. 
 
GSU (21-25 overall, 16-10 SWAC) outhit BCU 9-5, but the Wildcats hit three homers, dashing the Tigers' hopes of a series win. 
 
Shawn (2-4) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on three hits and six walks. Ethan Bates saw action out of the bullpen, going 3.1 innings and giving up three runs on two hits with three Ks. 
 
Nyan Hayes and Chenar Brown accounted for five of Grambling's hits with Hayes going 3-for-4 with a double and Brown going 2-for-5 with an RBI. 
 
With BCU (31-20, 22-4 SWAC) leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Grambling State picked up its first run of the game. After working the bases loaded with two outs, Brown ripped an RBI-single into centerfield to make it a 2-1 game. 
 
The Wildcats broke the game open in the sixth inning, plating six runs to open an 8-1 lead. 
 
The Tigers tried to fight back late. Brown and Trey Bridges began the bottom of the eighth reaching via a throwing error and a single. With one out, Marcerio Allen entered in a pinch-hitting role and doubled to left center field, bringing Brown around to score. A sacrifice fly by Shannon Martin added another run and set the score at 8-3.
 
BCU closed the scoring in the ninth on a solo homer by Andrey Martinez, his second of the day. 
 
Bethune-Cookman starting pitcher Edwin Sanchez (8-1) pitched 5.0 innings, striking out 10 and allowing one run on six hits.

Grambling State wraps its series with Bethune-Cookman on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
