Newsome, McLemore Lead Grambling on Day One of SWAC Track & Field Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. | Grambling State opened competition at the 2025 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a strong showing on Sunday, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the women's long jump, a top-three mark in the women's javelin, and several personal bests across the board at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

At the close of day one, the Lady Tigers sat in second place in the women's team standings with 17.5 points.

Daylece Newsome delivered one of the day's top performances for the Lady Tigers, placing second in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.83 meters.

In the women's javelin, Kimora McLemore secured third place with a career-best throw of 39.18 meters.On the track, Quincy Chery had the fourth-fastest time in Hurdles prelims, clocking in at 51.77 seconds.

In the men's hammer throw, Jean Dixon placed eighth with a mark of 47.23 meters, while teammate Jalen Peel finished 12th. 

Lawrence Lambert posted a strong effort in the men's long jump, placing ninth with a mark of 7.06 meters, and later added a 13th-place finish in the javelin throw with a best of 44.34 meters..

Ciera Smith competed in the first day of the women's heptathlon, producing solid performances in the high jump (1.44m), 200 meters (29.15), 100m hurdles (18.15), and shot put (7.37m). 

In the women's 200-meter prelims, Kyla Blockett ran 24.45 to finish 13th, while Journee Mayfield notched a personal-best 24.73 to place 18th. On the men's side, CJ Guidry led Grambling in the 200-meter prelims with a time of 21.96, good for 25th overall.

In addition to Newsome's second spot in the long jump, Grambling placed three more athletes inside the top 10. Angel Sanders finished sixth with a jump of 5.71 meters, and Jazmine Carraway followed in eighth with a season-best 5.66 meters. 

Shamya Joiner placed 11th at 5.53 meters, and senior Shatara Johnson rounded out the squad in 16th.

In women's javelin, Anaya Jones threw a personal-best 27.51 meters to place 13th overall, helping cap a productive day for the women's throwing unit.
