Grambling State Picks Up Momentum on Day Two of SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. | Grambling State continued its strong push at the 2025 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships during Day Two of competition on Monday, highlighted by a second-place finish in the women's triple jump, a top-three mark in the women's 400 meters, and several top-15 performances at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Marissa Tell delivered the standout performance of the day, claiming the second spot in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.41 meters, securing valuable team points for Grambling State. 

Kayla Ford advanced to the women's 400-meter finals and clocked a 55.54 to finish third overall after qualifying fifth in the prelims with a 56.52.

Ford also finished 14th in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25.04 seconds, followed closely by Amari Wrightsil in 15th place at 25.11.

In the men's high jump, Marcus Kennedy and Nick Bailey each cleared 2.02 meters to tie for sixth place, with Bailey registering a personal best. 

Jahorous Turner earned a 15th-place finish in the same event, clearing 1.92 meters. 

On the women's side, Deserae Charles recorded a 18th-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 11.76 meters and later placed ninth in the shot put with a distance of 12.02 meters.

Ike Jenkins had a strong showing in the men's long jump, placing sixth with a personal-best leap of 7.12 meters. 

In the women's pentathlon, Anaya Jones tied for fifth in the high jump at 1.50 meters and finished 11th in the shot put and 800 meters. 

Ciera Smith earned seventh in the high jump at 1.44 meters , took 10th in the shot put, and placed 12th in the long jump and 800 meters.

On the track, Savantez Phillips finished 14th in the men's 60-meter hurdles prelims with a personal-best 8.27 seconds, while teammate Dakari Betts finished 10th at 8.21 seconds.

Elijah Simmons ran a 6.95 in the men's 60-meter dash to place 16th and followed that up with a 22.19 in the 200 meters for 24th overall.

CJ Guidry ran a season-best 22.25 in the 200 meters to finish 25th and placed 22nd in the 60-meter dash at 7.02 seconds.

In relay action, the women's 4x400-meter team of Kayla Ford, Kyla Blockett, Amari Wrightsil, and Kourtney Warren placed 10th overall with a time of 3:51.94.

On the men's side, the 4x400-meter squad of Greenwood, Simmons, Chery, and Gatewood-Peterson clocked a season-best 3:18.37 to finish 11th. 

The men's distance medley relay team of Elijah Beal, Gatewood-Peterson, Chery, and Aiden Starling rounded out the day with a 10th-place finish in 11:21.85.
