Chery Breaks School Record as Grambling State Wraps Up Competition at SWAC Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. | Quincy Chery delivered a historic performance for Grambling State at the 2025 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, breaking the school record in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a blistering time of 50.56 seconds to finish second overall.

Chery's performance highlighted a successful weekend for the Tigers, who earned several top-15 finishes across both track and field events.

In addition to his silver-medal run in the 400m hurdles final, Chery placed fourth in the preliminary round (51.77) and contributed to the men's 4x400m relay team's eighth-place finish in 3:12.09, joining teammates Greenwood, CJ Guidry, and Simmons.

On the women's side, Daylece Newsome led the long jump squad with a second-place leap of 5.83 meters a personal record for her. 

Angel Sanders and Jazmine Carraway also made the top 10, placing sixth (5.71m) and eighth (5.66m) her season best, respectively. 

Carraway later earned a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a personal best of 12.45 meters, while teammate Marissa Tell followed in fourth place with a season best 12.12 meters.

Kimora McLemore made her mark in the javelin, taking third place with a personal record of 39.18 meters. 

In the high jump, Bethany Peoples earned sixth place by clearing 1.57 meters for a new personal best.

Kyla Blockett sprinted her way to sixth place in the women's 100-meter final (11.80) and helped guide the 4x100m relay team to a sixth-place finish (46.56) alongside Journee Mayfield, Newsome, and Brown.

Ciera Smith competed in the heptathlon and finished with several notable event performances, including seventh in the high jump (1.44m), sixth in the javelin (22.82m), and 11th in the long jump (4.46m).

For the Grambling men, Marcus Kennedy claimed second place in the high jump with a personal record of 2.07 meters. Nick Bailey added a sixth-place mark at 2.02 meters, and

Jahorous Turner placed 12th with a season-best jump of 1.92 meters.

In throws, Jean de Dixon placed eighth in the hammer throw (47.23m), while Jalen Peel followed in 12th (43.16m). 

Jalen later finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 44.06 meters. Teammates Jean de Dixon and Jaylen Mays finished 15th and 17th. In the shot put, Mays secured 10th place (14.26m).

Sprinter-hurdler Savantez Phillips also made an impact, placing fourth in the men's 110-meter hurdles final with a personal best of 13.91 seconds.

He also placed 15th in the 100-meter dash prelims and ran a leg of the eighth-place 4x100m relay with Guidry, Lambert, and Beal.

Aidan Starling clocked a personal best of 10:53.32 in the 3000m steeplechase to place ninth and later added a 15th-place finish in the 5000m.
