BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Grambling State University Indoor Track & Field teams started the 2026 season on a strong note, notching 13 top five finishes and three wins in the UAB Blazer Invitational held at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday.
Skylar Hundall highlighted the afternoon with a dominant win in the men's 1-mile run. He crossed the line with a time a 4:12.88, the best mark among all HBCU athletes this season.
On the women's side,
Madison Holloway snagged first place in the high jump, leaping 1.64m.
Grambling State's third win of the day came in the men's 4x400. The team of Justin Greenwood,
Quincy Chery,
Elijah Simmons and Leterence Fleming clocked in at 3:18.95.
The women's 4x400 team of Niyah Conley Paityn Neely, I'Ja Walter and Aamerie Anderson secured second place with a time of 3:59.42, finishing behind Troy (3:50.65).
Savantez Phillips paced GSU in the men's 60m hurdles, coming in second place with a personal best time of 8.20.
In the women's field events,
Taniyah Thomas finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.28m.
Shamya Joiner also opened the season strong, finishing second in the women's long jump (5.55m).
Angel Sanders came in fourth place with a jump of 5.44m.
Marissa Tell, another SWAC Title contender, grabbed second in the women's triple jump (11.33m). Desarae Charles wrapped up the top five women's finishes, nabbing fourth in the shot put (11.43m).
In the men's field events,
Nick Bailey found his way to the podium in the high jump, leaping 1.96m to land in third.
Ike Jenkins earned fourth in the men's jump (6.86m) while
Jalen Peel wrapped up fifth place in the men's shot put (14.45m).
