Tigers Post Multiple Top-Five Finishes at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Grambling State University Indoor Track & Field teams continued the 2026 season on Saturday, posting multiple top-five finishes while competing at the Samford Open held at the Birmingham Metro CrossPlex.

On the men's side, Quincy Chery led the Tigers in the 400 meters finishing seventh overall with a time of 48.30.

Leterence Fleming followed closely behind, placing 12th after clocking 49.38.

Elijah Simmons represented Grambling State in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 22.58.

In the men's middle-distance events, Justin Greenwood paced the Tigers in the 800 meters finishing ninth with a time of 1:55.75.

Skylar Hundall added a 20th-place finish at 1:58.26.

Aidan Starling rounded out the distance performances for Grambling State, recording a time of 9:47.54 in the 3,000 meters.

Savantez Phillips turned in a strong effort in the men's 60-meter hurdles, finishing ninth overall with a time of 8.33.

Dakari Betts followed with a mark of 8.67.

In the men's field events, Ike Jenkins delivered one of the top performances of the day finishing fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.01 meters.

Josiah Joseph added an eighth-place finish in the event with a jump of 6.61 meters.

In the throws, Johnathan Berry led Grambling State in the shot put placing 15th with a mark of 14.25 meters.

Jalen Peel (13.78m) and Jalen Mays (13.43m) followed.

Peel also paced the Tigers in the weight throw, recording a mark of 14.85 meters.

On the women's side, Madison Holloway highlighted the day with a third-place finish in the high jump clearing 1.65 meters.

Shamaya Joiner continued her strong season in the long jump, placing second overall with a leap of 5.72 meters.

Jazmine Carraway and Angel Sanders added fifth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively.

Marissa Tell earned a podium finish in the women's triple jump, finishing second with a mark of 11.83 meters.

In the throwing events, Taniyah Thomas placed fourth leading the Tigers in the weight throw with a toss of 16.56 meters.

Deserae Charles (13.79m) and Helen Djuissi-Tchuenkam (12.03m) also competed.

On the track, Niyah Conley posted a time of 59.27 in the women's 400 meters, while Y'Niese Colbert ran 2:33.71 in the 800 meters.

I'Ja Walter paced Grambling State in the women's 200 meters finishing 12th with a time of 25.53.

Aamerie Anderson delivered a strong showing in the women's 60-meter hurdles, placing fifth overall with a time of 8.89.

Trinity Parham and Journie Mayfield represented the Tigers in the 60-meter dash, clocking times of 8.05 and 8.06, respectively.
