Grambling State Splits Opening Day at Lion Invitational

COMMERCE, Texas | The Grambling State Tigers softball opened play at the Lion Invitational with a split on Wednesday, defeating Southeast Missouri Redhawks softball, 8–1, before falling to East Texas A&M Lions softball, 10–8, at John Cain Family Field.

Grambling State jumped out to an early advantage in the opener against Southeast Missouri, scoring six runs in the first inning.

Kamryn Broussard doubled to right-center to drive in the first run, followed by an RBI groundout from Z'Natria Evans.

The Tigers took advantage of wild pitches and aggressive baserunning, including a steal of home by Ziya Donaldson, to push the lead to 6–0 before the Redhawks recorded an out.

Southeast Missouri got on the board in the third inning with a solo home run, but Grambling State answered in the fourth.

Broussard launched a two-run homer to deep center extending the lead to 8–1.

Jaidan Richard earned the complete-game victory in the circle, allowing one run on five hits across seven innings.

Broussard finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Katelynn Walls went 2-for-4 with two runs.

The Tigers totaled eight hits and stole five bases in the win.

In the nightcap against East Texas A&M, Grambling State struck first with two runs in the opening inning.

East Texas A&M responded with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to regain control.

Grambling State continued to battle plating four runs in the second inning to cut into the deficit and swing momentum back in its favor.

RBIs from Broussard, Logan-Ray Gaspar, Evans, Cadashia Collins, and Toni Purchas fueled the early surge.

The Lions added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and held off the Tigers down the stretch to secure the 10–8 win.

Broussard went 3-for-4 in the second game, while Walls finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
